Dr. Polly Panitz, FAACP, is a board certified, fellowship-trained Behavioral and Developmental Pediatrician who has practiced at the Herndon office of Capital Area Pediatrics since 2008. Her training consists of two fellowships, one with the National Committee on Clinical Infancy Programs and another from Childrens Memorial Hospital of the Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, a pediatric residency (also at Childrens Memorial Hospital), and medical school at the Boston University School of Medicine.
Her background includes ten years of general pediatric practice with special interests in the behavioral challenges of young children. Her work focuses on supporting families and promoting healthy parenting styles that allow for optimal outcomes for children both at risk and typically developing. She has specialized in feeding problems and the management of Autistic Spectrum Disorders in young children.
Dr. Panitz works to create a new model of pediatric practice within Capital Area Pediatrics, working alongside the general pediatricians to promote the early identification and management of developmental and behavioral issues. Furthermore, she provides support to families as they navigate the challenges and treatment paths appropriate for their children. She is available for consultation on behavioral interventions, on developmental concerns, as well as on the management of children along the Autistic Spectrum. She is familiar with the resources available in the community and works closely with professionals in the mental health and educational fields to provide coordination of care for these families.
Appointments with our Behavioral Developmental Pediatrician are limited to patients of Capital Area Pediatrics
. Due to the current demand we are unable to offer appointments to patients whose physician is not a Capital Area Pediatrics provider.
In addition to individual appointments, she holds parenting seminars on various topics. Information about these seminars, as they become available, can be found on CAP NEWS
Referral Process:
1. We encourage all new patients to discuss the referral with their primary Pediatrician or Nurse practitioner prior to initiating the intake process.
2. All new patients will call for an intake appointment of one hour and a second one-hour developmental assessment of the child.
Both parents are encouraged to attend the initial appointment without the child.
Prior to the first appointment, the family should download and print out from the website an
intake packet
complete and bring with them. This will include the following:
Name of referring clinician
Chief concern of referring clinician
Copy of the growth chart and any relevant records
Family questionnaires
Directions and financial information
3. The following are
not
indications for referral and should be discussed with the primary clinician for more appropriate referral:
Children over the age of 10 years
Children needing psychoeducational evaluations to assess for learning disabilities
4. All children will be seen by Dr. Panitz in the Herndon office. All assessments will be returned to the referring clinician.
5. Patients will be held financially responsible for all services not covered by insurance, although we will make our best effort to ensure this will not happen.
Dr. Panitz is credentialed with all of the insurance companies covered by CAP.
6. There will be some children for whom school and/or home visits will be helpful, but this expense will need to be 100% covered by the family. This will be discussed on an individual basis.
Please call the Herndon office to schedule your two initial appointments, once the above have been satisfied.
We look forward to your first appointment,
